Quickly Fix Faulty Green Screen Footage with Key Cleaner and Spill Suppressor

Blotchy, chattering key from compressed green screen footage? Fix it in After Effects with Keylight, Key Cleaner, and Advanced Spill Suppressor — in that order.

Your key looks terrible and it’s not your fault. The edges are blocky, they flicker from frame to frame, and there’s a green halo around your subject that no amount of slider-dragging removes. This is what keying compressed footage looks like — and After Effects has two effects built specifically to rescue it: Key Cleaner and Advanced Spill Suppressor.

Why Compressed Footage Keys Badly

A keyer works by reading color. Compression throws most of that color away.

Nearly all consumer cameras, phones, and screen recorders shoot 4:2:0 chroma subsampled H.264 — the color information is stored at a quarter of the image resolution, then macroblock compression smears what’s left. Your eye barely notices, but the keyer sees stair-stepped color edges where hair meets green, and those blocky edges shift every frame as the codec re-guesses the compression. The result: crunchy mattes and frame-to-frame flicker, known as chatter.

That’s why professional green screen work is shot in 4:2:2 or better — if codec terms are fuzzy, the H.264 vs. ProRes guide covers what subsampling actually stores. But you have the footage you have. Here’s the repair workflow.

The Three-Effect Stack

The fix is a chain of three effects, applied in this order:

  1. Keylight — pulls the key
  2. Key Cleaner — repairs the damaged matte
  3. Advanced Spill Suppressor — removes green contamination from the subject

After Effects ships this as a ready-made animation preset — search the Effects & Presets panel for “Keylight” and you’ll find the combined Keylight + Key Cleaner + Advanced Spill Suppressor preset that applies all three at once. The order matters: Key Cleaner operates on the alpha channel Keylight produces, and spill suppression should run on the cleaned result.

Step 1: Pull a Rough Key with Keylight

Apply Keylight and click the Screen Colour eyedropper on the green near your subject. Don’t chase perfection here — the goal is a decent starting matte, not a finished one.

Switch Keylight’s View to Screen Matte to see the alpha in grayscale. Adjust Clip Black up until the background is solid black and Clip White down until your subject is solid white. Stop before the edges turn hard and crunchy — over-clipping is the classic beginner mistake, and it destroys exactly the edge detail Key Cleaner is about to recover. A slightly gray, slightly noisy matte is fine at this stage.

Step 2: Recover the Edges with Key Cleaner

Key Cleaner exists for one job: recovering alpha-channel detail that compression destroyed. It analyzes the matte edge and rebuilds it, smoothing the blocky stair-steps back into a natural edge.

Two controls do the work. Additional Edge Radius widens the band of edge pixels the effect reconstructs — increase it if the damage extends further from the edge. Reduce Chatter targets the frame-to-frame flicker specifically, stabilizing edges that jitter because the codec compressed each frame differently. If your matte crawls and boils on playback, this checkbox is the fix.

Toggle the effect on and off while watching a hair or edge detail. On compressed footage the difference is immediate.

Step 3: Kill the Spill with Advanced Spill Suppressor

With the matte repaired, your subject is still tinted green — bounced light from the screen contaminates hair, shoulders, and skin. Advanced Spill Suppressor removes it.

The Method dropdown has two modes. Standard is automatic: it detects the key color and suppresses it, with a single strength control. Start there — it handles most footage. Ultra exposes manual controls for the key color and suppression range, worth switching to when Standard either leaves green behind or starts shifting skin tones toward magenta.

Check the result against the actual background plate — spill that’s invisible over the transparency checkerboard glows over a dark background.

Why does my key flicker from frame to frame?

Codec compression re-encodes each frame slightly differently, so the blocky color edges around your subject shift constantly, and the keyer faithfully reproduces that shifting as matte flicker. Enable Reduce Chatter in Key Cleaner. Shooting in a less compressed format prevents it at the source.

What’s the difference between Standard and Ultra in Advanced Spill Suppressor?

Standard auto-detects the key color and suppresses spill with minimal input — it’s the right default. Ultra gives you manual control over the key color and suppression behavior for footage where Standard misses spill or damages legitimate colors, like green clothing or foliage.

Can badly lit green screen footage be fully fixed in post?

Improved, yes; fully fixed, not always. Key Cleaner repairs compression damage well, but deep shadows, wrinkles, and hotspots on the screen create green values too far apart for one key to cover. If a shot resists this workflow, try keying it in two halves with masked duplicate layers — and light the screen more evenly next time.
